EMT/Paramedic diploma program classes & curriculum details

This diploma program expands upon basic EMT training to cover the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within an EMS system. You will discover the expanded capabilities of a paramedic vs. an EMT and develop the foundational theoretical and practical education to succeed in both roles.

Classes are delivered at our campus in Birmingham, Alabama. The diploma program includes a 270-hour field preceptorship to ensure you earn the practical experience necessary to excel right from the start in your new career.

EM 189 - Paramedic Anatomy and Physiology 3.00

This course will provide the paramedic with information about anatomy and physiology relating to each of the following body systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, joints, 神经和特殊感官. Biochemistry, cellular biology, and histology will be integrated into each body system.

This course is the laboratory portion of EM189. Students will utilize their knowledge of the human body systems and learn to locate specific structures on and within the human body.

EM 195 - Advanced Trauma Management 6.00

EM 204 - Transition to Paramedic Practice 3.00

This course is designed to meet additional state and local educational requirements for paramedic practice. EM 206 - Paramedic Field Preceptorship 6.00

This course provides field experiences in the pre-hospital setting with advanced life support EMS units. Under the direct supervision of a field preceptor, students synthesize cognitive knowledge and skills developed in the skills laboratory and hospital clinical to provide safe and effective patient care in the pre-hospital environment. 课程完成后, students should have refined and validated their patient-care practices to provide safe and effective patient care over a broad spectrum of patient situations and complaints.

EM 207 - Paramedic Team Leadership Preceptorship 1.00

This course is designed to evaluate students' ability to integrate didactic and psychomotor skills and clinical and field internship instruction to serve as a competent entry-level paramedic. This final evaluation (rather than instructional) course focuses on students' professional attributes and integrative competence in 临床决策 and team leadership in the pre-hospital setting. 课程完成后, students should have demonstrated adequate knowledge and skills, professional attitudes and attributes, and 临床决策 and team leadership abilities to effectively function as a competent entry-level paramedic.

The 急救医疗技术员—Paramedic program will cover the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic within an EMS system, applying the basic concepts of development, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to assess and manage patients with emergency medical needs. The student will learn how to maintain a patient's airway, 给病人充氧和通气, 要有足够的历史记录, and perform a comprehensive physical exam. Students will be able to properly administer medications and communicate effectively with other healthcare providers including physicians, nurses, 以及其他专职医疗人员. CAAHEP Accredited Paramedic Programs track and report outcome measures annually to the Committee on Accreditation for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

The most current CoAEMSP Annual Report was for the calendar year 2021.

The most recent success rate for the National Registry of EMT Paramedic/State Cognitive exam was 89.3%.

The most recent positive placement rate for graduates was 93.3%. Positive placement is defined by the CoAEMSP as ‘Employed full or part-time in a related field and/or continuing his/her education and/or serving in the military’. Positive placement is measured at completion of the program.

The most recent retention rate was 66.7%.
